every moment in time is unique.
a song or a good play on stage can provide a clear surface which enables the audience to recognize themselves. when the content reaches the observer, it causes a very individual reaction. this reaction is a reflection of the viewer's own story and experience in life. like a drop of water on a calm surface, something hits your mind. it can be a wonderful or painful reflection of self.
photography is an amazing mirror for the observer, the model and of course the photographer. pictures capture moments in time and every moment is unique. yet, there might be nothing like time at all. so, what is a photo all about? perhaps nothing but an empty surface where we can see ourselves reflected back? maybe there is nothing to watch but our own imagination and concept of the world.
some say, a photo is a stolen moment but i believe that this point of view lacks understanding. a camera is just a light-proof box with a lens. the person behind the camera takes the picture and the person in front of the camera gives an image. the model or subject determines to the extend of intimacy on a photo. if a photographer captures a moment which doesn’t want to be shared by the model, this might be a stolen moment.
it is of the utmost importance that the photographer respects his models, his subjects and the world around. with such a mindset it is possible to access the real thing and picture an ongoing process without causing any harm.
the photographer is responsible for a mutual understanding on the limits of shared intimacy. this is what makes photography so unique: the opportunity to witness and record the closeness of a moment. real, straight and honest. a one of a kind. photography is still the medium for the moment.
watching a photo enables one to freeze the speed of life and generates space to explore. after all, photography is about stories. it's about life. unique. unchanged. timeless.
